Der 1930 in Karlsruhe geborene Günter Dietz hat sich als Altphilologe, Übersetzer und Lyriker einen Namen gemacht. Er studierte Klassische Philologie und Germanistik in Freiburg i. Br. Im Anschluss an die Promotion bei Karl Büchner mit einer Arbeit über "Sallusts Briefe an Cäsar" arbeitete er als Lehrer in Athen. In dieser Zeit (1958 bis 1964) kam Dietz in Berührung mit der modernen griechischen Literatur und fing an, Lyrik zu übersetzen.
