Grandson, Otto of (Otton de Grandson) (ca. 1238–1328)

Abstract
Otto de Grandson was an influential advisor to two English monarchs. Living until age 90, he spent over fifty years in English service. Born in Savoy in 1238, Otto was the heir of a middling Savoyard noble, the oldest child of 12. Because of his large family, Otto's father sought posts and preferment for his children abroad, so Otto traveled to England with his younger brother in the late 1240s. In 1258 his father died, leaving Otto lord of Grandson, in modern‐day Switzerland. Though Otto retained the patrimony for his long life, he only episodically visited and often left its administration to various relatives.
