MR0175 - Past, Present and Future

Abstract Oil and gas industry need for a reliable procedure for selecting metallic materials for hydrogen sulfide service provided the emphasis for the development of NACE Standard MR0175. Early research and field experience with sour gas (gas containing H2S) led to several guidelines prepared by a Canadian industry group. These guidelines were later used in the preparation of NACE Report 1F166 and NACE Standard MR0175. A number of governmental agencies, such as the Texas Statewide Rule 36, have referred to MR0175 for guidance on metallic material selection where H2S is expected to be present. MR0175 is reissued annually as new items and revisions are made. Currently the European Federation of Corrosion (EFC) is considering issuing their version of a metal selection guideline document for sour environments. NACE has initiated discussions with ISO to convert MR0175, TM0177 and possibly TM0284 into ISO standards. Close cooperation between EFC and NACE is essential for these efforts to be successful.
