Grandchildren’s Experiences in Iranian Multigenerational Families Living with Grandparents

View through CrossRef
Abstract Background Today, factors such as longer life expectancy, fewer traditional families, more single-parent households, and more working mothers have increased grandparents’ ability to have a significant impact on their grandchildren’s lives. This study aimed to explore experiences of grandchildren living with their grandparents. Methods This descriptive phenomenological qualitative study used purposive sampling to select 16 grandchildren who have lived with their grandfather, grandmother, or both in the past or present. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed the data using Colaizzi’s seven-step method and MAXQDA version 20. Results Two main themes and five subthemes emerged from the data analysis: maintenance of the family structure (benefiting valuable resources, rebuilding a bridge to the past, and enhancing family bonds) and problems and challenges of living with grandparents (caregiving challenges and intergenerational gaps). Conclusions The research findings revealed that living with grandparents led to both positive experiences and challenges for grandchildren. It is suggested that policymakers and family health therapists utilize these findings to create social programs that encourage intergenerational activities, foster positive family interactions, and enhance overall well-being. Clinical trial number: Not applicable.
