Reaffirming Collective Strength: Understanding How Multigenerational Living Benefits Black Families

View through CrossRef
Multigenerational family structures have historically been a cornerstone of Black American families, offering economic sustainability, emotional strength, and cultural preservation. This literature review synthesizes research on the benefits of multigenerational living, drawing from historical, economic, psychological, and sociological perspectives. The review begins with an exploration of the historical foundations of multigenerational households, highlighting survival strategies developed during slavery and post-emancipation periods. The economic benefits of shared resources, wealth-building, and financial security facilitated by communal living are explored, particularly in the context of systemic racial and economic inequality. Furthermore, the emotional and mental health benefits of multigenerational living are addressed, with a focus on the role of extended family networks in fostering resilience and mitigating the psychological impact of racial trauma.  However, while multigenerational living has long been beneficial, the shift away from collective living among Black Americans in recent decades presents a contrast to cultural patterns observed in other racial and ethnic communities. This shift, influenced by policies and societal pressures, has left gaps in understanding the full potential of multigenerational living as a strategy for economic resilience, healing, and generational uplift. A return to collective living could provide an opportunity to regain lost cultural and economic advantages. This review concludes by advocating for further research into the potential benefits of a paradigm shift back to intergenerational cohabitation within Black American communities.
