Vase

View through Europeana Collections
Twisting sea gods, monster-like fish heads on the base and mermaids wrapping themselves around the handles: this dynamic silver vase is crawling with mythological sea creatures. The central depiction features Neptune, ruler of the sea, tamer of the waves. Nineteenth-century artist Antoine Vechte executed these fantastic designs with a hammer and punch, both the flat and the threedimensional decoration. He drew his inspiration from the work of famous 16th-century Renaissance artists.
