O haikai, de origem japonesa, é uma modalidade poética que prima pela simplicidade, concisão e plasticidade. Ligado estreitamente à cultura japonesa, particularmente ao Budismo Zen, e de difícil tradução, o haikai japonês muitas vezes não é compreendido pelo leitor ocidental. E mesmo alguns tradutores não conseguem expressar tudo que o haikai sugere em sua forma fixa de dezessete sílabas.
