Rizenin Köklü Geleneği Hâfızlık Kuran Kursları

The Deep-Rooted Tradition of Rize Hifz Quran Courses Historical Process, Educational Approaches, and Participant Perspectives This book is a comprehensive field study that explores Quran memorization (ḥifẓ) education in the province of Rize -one of Turkeys long-established centers of traditional Islamic learning- from historical, pedagogical, and sociological perspectives. The work is the outcome of two academic projects supported by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University and is based on qualitative research methods. The study examines six Quran schools operating in Rize -namely, Pekmezli, Kendirli, Mataracı, Taşçıoğlu Mosque, Tütüncüler Village, and Ortaköy Hacı Hafız Yusuf Yılmaz Quran Courses—in terms of their historical development, physical infrastructure, financial resources, student and instructor profiles, and educational models. Semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and on-site observations were used to collect data. The impact of these institutions on both individuals and the wider community is assessed through a multidimensional lens. The book goes beyond merely focusing on pedagogical processes; it also highlights how ḥifẓ education contributes to personal development by fostering self-confidence, discipline, and a sense of social responsibility. Moreover, it shows how these Quran schools serve as centers of social cohesion and spiritual guidance in their local communities. By addressing a significant gap in the literature, this work not only documents the unique characteristics of ḥifẓ education in Rize but also provides original and systematic data, making it a valuable resource for both academics and practitioners working in the field of Islamic education.
