Impact of Parenting Styles on Commitment in Romantic Relationship and Self Esteem among Young Adults

Lack of romantic commitment and low self-esteem are important psycho social problems. Although its occurrence is much higher, Pakistan has not yet realized it. This study aims to recognize the impact of parenting styles on the level of self-esteem and romantic commitment among young adults studying in different universities of Islamabad living in , Pakistan. This study analyzes the association of demographics with romantic commitment and self-esteem. A sample of (N= 250) young adults from different universities were assessed through the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ-30), Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES-10), Sternberg Love Triangular Scale (SLTS -45). There was a significantly positive correlation between parenting styles and level of romantic commitment among young adults (p > 0.05), however there was a negative correlation of authoritarian and permissive parenting with romantic commitment and self-esteem (p < 0.05). There exists an association between parenting style with romantic commitment and self-esteem among young adults. Positive parenting increases the level of commitment and self-esteem whereas negative parenting styles decrease the level of romantic commitment and self-esteem among young adults. It is concluded that support and positive parenting increases the level of romantic commitment and self-esteem among university students.
