The Ayurvedic Significance of Buttermilk - A Nutritional and Therapeutic Perspective

Ayurveda is a well-known traditional Indian system of medicine. Ayurveda have holistic approach which not only focuses on treating the disease but also emphasize on various practices of preventing disease. Many Samhitas have mentioned various practices like Dinacharya (daily regimen), Ritucharya (seasonal regimen), Sadavritta (good conduct), different Ahara (food) and Vihara (lifestyle) which helps us to maintain disease free condition. Ahara is one of the key component in our lifestyle which not only effects our physical but also impact mental health. In Ayurveda Ahara (food) is considered as one of the three pillars of life (Tryoupstambha) along with Nidra (sleep) & Brahmacharya (regulated conduct). Ahara (food) plays vital role in maintaining good health & also act as Mahabhaisaja if consumed properly it is responsible for complexion, clarity, longevity, happiness, nourishment, strength & intellect. Takra, like Ahara (food) is advantageous for both healthy people and those who are diseased. Ahara (food) is considered as Prana. Takra is also used as Anupana in many conditions. Ayurveda mentioned critical role of Ahara (Diet) in maintaining good health as well as treating disease. Swasthavritta is a branch in Ayurveda which focuses more on preventive aspect rather than curative as for doing so it incorporate different types of Kalpana in one’s lifestyle to maintain good health. Different Acharyas have mentioned any Ahara Kalpanas for maintaining good health as well as treating many diseases. Takra Kalpana is one such Kalpana mentioned in Ayurveda which serves both preventive and curative role. Takra is one of the dietary product mentioned in Ayurvedic Samhitas. It is prepared by specific method from Dadhi. It is used to maintain health as well as treating many diseases specially Agni Vikara (digestive fire disorder) & disease which originated due in Agni Vikriti (digestive fire disorder). Its usefulness is mentioned in many diseases like Arsha, Udara, Grahini etc. Takra is a natural prebiotic since it contains a lots of good bacteria that our GIT needs. Ayurveda mentioned use of Takra with many other herbs according to different conditions or different disease. Different Acharyas have mentioned preparation of Takra differently which have their unique properties according to preparations and used according in different Doshas.
