Old Bridge House, Ambleside, Westmorland
View through Europeana Collections
Ambleside is a small town of grey slate houses.
This unique house is one bay wide and one bay deep and rests on a
very small bridge. It was originally built as a garden folly on the
estate of Ambleside Hall. The bridge is on the road between
Windermere and Rydal. In the early 19th century, Ambleside became a
popular attraction for wealthy travellers. Access to France was
difficult because of the war and in his book of 1810, Wordsworth
promoted a tour of the Lake District as an alternative to the Grand
Tour of Europe traditionally undertaken by the
wealthy.
