This chapter focuses on William Apess's life during and after the War of 1812. Apess was convinced by a sergeant and a few of his men shortly after his arrival in New York to enlist as a soldier to fight the British. Before he knew it, Apess was on Governor's Island in New York harbor. Apess and his cohort were then ordered to Staten Island, where they waited two weeks before beginning their advance on Canada. One day before Christmas, 1814, England and the United States signed the Treaty of Ghent, ending the war. This chapter examines Apess's experience as a vagabond after the War of 1812; his odyssey through Upper Canada and his encounters with the Haudenosaunees; his long journey home to Connecticut; his discovery of Methodism and his life as a preacher; his relocation to Providence, Rhode Island; and his struggles for ordination as a Methodist.
