Key Initiatives towards HSE Excellence

Abstract
Description
This paper describes key initiatives of the HSE management system that has been developed, and implementation at KOC West Kuwait (WK) fields which resulted in 26 Million Man-Hours worked without any lost time injury till 31st March 2012.
Application
The multi-cultural composition of the workforce imposes specific difficulties in execution of HSE initiatives and application of the HSE Management System. Significant efforts have been made by HSE (WK) Team to address these areas using approaches such as communication & awareness on HSE Management System with all levels of Business partners and Company’s employees.
The initiatives and achievement that HSE West Kuwait has adopted resulted in minimizing the industrial incidents and Motor Vehicles Accidents. This paper also focuses on the process of implementation of various initiatives taken by the HSE (WK) to achieve a substantial lowering of HSE risks, reduction of disabling injuries and frequency rates, and employee HSE behavior, enhanced Contractor’s HSE performance and many more indirect positive results.
Significance of Subject Matter
All of the company’s activities have the potential to affect the health, safety and environment of its stakeholders and nearby communities in a positive or negative way. KOC is committed to managing these effects and the risks associated with its activities and products. To fulfill the commitment, HSE (WK) initiated following activities for the implementation of a HSE Management System at the field. Setting up of HSE (West Kuwait) Team and streamlining of responsibilities / functions.Clearance of Explosive Ordinance Disposal from West Kuwait key areas.HSE Compliance at Site by Leadership HSE visits.Communication with KOC Employees and Business Partners (Contractors).Road Safety Measures.Initiating and ensuring the presence of a Physician in WK Clinic.Active Participation in International Conferences.British Safety Council Award-International Safety Award for 2011 for WK Fields.Certification for the "Campaign of the Year" award by SHP-IOSH.Results and Conclusion.
