Three Norms of Praise
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This chapter evaluates three norms that might govern the expression of praise. Even where praise is deserved, its expression might not be appropriate. Norms that might govern expressions of praise include: a norm concerning its distribution, across people or groups; another concerning the standing of the person expressing praise; and an epistemic norm, concerning what praisers ought to reasonably believe about the targets of praise. This chapter argues that attending to the oppressive potential of praise, and its function in signalling values in a moral community, enables us to better evaluate and articulate each of these norms.
