The first is descriptive: using the flourishing methodology of corpus linguistics, and a corpus of Written Texts of 18th-21th centuries, it aims to describe the development of German phraseology, in particular in relation to its semantic and structural specificity. The description confirms the phraseological specificity of German but shows that not all of this can be ascribed to semantic or structural factors. The second objective of this thesis is therefore explanatory: given the differences evident between the phraseological units, and by means of a diachronic comparison, it asks how the phraseological system has developed in relation to the certain historical period. The research is closely connected with the definition of peculiarities of quantitative and qualitative development phraseological units of German as one of the most important intralingual factor. The usage of this approach can give a complete picture of peculiarities of phraseological system of German. Intra- and extralingual factors relevant for formation of phraseological units of German have been determined. The paper suggests a corpusbased approach to the study of German phraseology, which consists in identification of intra- and extralingual factors relevant for the formation of phraseological system of German. The criteria for establishing the semantic or structural specificity of phraseology have been defined. Historical and genetic analyses of phraseological units have been determined.
