P. I. Tchaikovsky and Romance “Mezza Notte” (Problems of Dating and Authorship)
View through CrossRef
The romance “Mezza notte” is considered one of the earliest, amateur works by P. I. Tchaikovsky, written in the pre-conservatory period (according to various assumptions from 1850s to the early 1860s). Until recently, this romance has hardly attracted the attention of researchers. The surge of interest in it and the difficult history of its creation was caused by the appearance in 2020 of the article by Roland de Vet “Romance P. I. Tchaikovsky ‘Mezza notte'.” On the basis of the provisions of this article and the new facts published there from the creative history of the romance further research steps have been taken, which relate to the study of the peculiarities of music publishing practice in Russia in the period of the XIX-early XX centuries (in particular, the practice of reprinting on printed boards). The results of the study presented and analized in the text of the proposed work made it possible to draw some additional conclusions regarding the dating of “Mezza notte” and possible belonging of his music not to P. I. Tchaikovsky, but to some of the composer's namesakes.
