Ettore Lo Gatto, Enrico Damiani e Novellieri slavi

Edited by Ettore Lo Gatto and Enrico Damiani, the literary anthology Novellieri slavi was published by Salvatore De Carlo in 1946 and included in the collection “Enciclopedia della novella”. The volume constitutes a unicum as it presents a selection of authors representing all Slavic literatures translated in Italian. The essay reconstructs the genesis of the anthology and the editors’ choices in the light of the relationship between the Italian literary field and the birth of Slavic Studies as a discipline. By analyzing the role of Narratori slavi in the circulation of Slavic literature in Italy, the essay tries to identify the reasons why the anthology has been largely unnoticed within the related academic field.
