Collective psychological ownership in family firms and its implications

This study investigates the socio-psychological dynamics within family firms, emphasizing the role of emotions and Family Collective Psychological Ownership (FCPO) and their implications on intergenerational knowledge transfer and succession planning. Utilizing a qualitative and quantitative approach, the research was conducted with family firms in the autonomous community of Navarre, Spain. This study is composed of three parts. The first part focuses on emotions and their implications for intergenerational knowledge transfer. The second part includes three studies on family collective psychological ownership. The third part consists of two chapters on the implications of Family Collective Psychological Ownership for succession planning. In the part one, the study identifies various emotional archetypes within family businesses, categorizing them based on their emotional characteristics and approaches to knowledge transfer. It highlights how positive emotions and early experiences with the business contribute to effective knowledge transfer and succession planning. In the part two, the second chapter makes a literature review covering key concepts such as psychological ownership and collective psychological ownership. The third chapter show how family collective psychological ownership develops in family firms. The fourth chapter details the process of developing and validating a new scale to measure FCPO. It discusses the psychometric properties of the scale, including factor analysis, reliability, and validity tests. In the third part, the chapter five and six explores the concept of FCPO and its implications for succession planning. Finally, the study concludes by summarizing the key findings and their contributions to the understanding of family business dynamics. It acknowledges the limitations of the research and suggests directions for future studies.
