Polarization and violent communication: a speech-act theoretical perspective

This paper explores how polarization and violent communication in online spaces can be approached from a speech-act theoretical perspective. My aim is to show how communicative strategies aimed at discrediting and delegitimizing opponents exploit and distort the dynamics of illocutionary acts, particularly assertions, amplifying polarization and reinforcing echo chambers. Using an Austin framework and examples from social media, I highlight how these distortions shape hostility in polarized environments.
