FIGURE. Elephant White, standing with his head bent down and turned to the right. The body shaped in vaults and spirals. On the back a brown saddle, saddle cover in brown and yellow. Holes for light or incense in the middle of the saddle. The elephant has a hole in his back where Samantabhadra was likely to be on a lotus, because he used to ride a white elephant. Samantabhadra is a bodhisattva in Mahayanabuddism and is associated with practice and meditation, and is the patron of the great Lotussutran. Together with Shakyamuni Buddha and another boddhisattva named Manjusri, he is part of the Trinity Shakyamuni. This figure is therefore likely to
originally included in a trio of Buddhist images.
