View through Europeana Collections
The depicted bridge is the Milvische Bei (itl. outdated: Ponte Molle), which is the starting point of the straightforward north-south connection between TiBei fer and Forum Romanum (Via Flaminia - Piazza del Popolo - Via del Corso - Forum Romanum). In 312 it was the scene of the battle between Constantine I and Maxentius (Battle of the Milvian Bridge), which resulted in the incorporation of Christianity as an equal religion into the Roman cult of state and the end of the persecution of Christians in Rome. The origin of the bridge lies in the 2nd century ADSince then, however, it has often been destroyed and rebuilt, especially in the 15th and 19th centuries. Two arches are still preserved from the ancient bridge. The defensive bridge tower is due to a first military tower built by General Belsario in the 6th century, to which Vasi explicitly refers in his engraving. At the beginning of the 19th century, however, it was rebuilt by Giuseppe Valadier in the course of large-scale renewal work on the bridge in the classical style. Signature: G Vasi inc.
