View through CrossRef
Abstract
Civil wars tend to last for years and display a destructive tendency to both escalate and to expand geographically. This chapter discusses the importance and prevalence of civil wars. It highlights the theories and statistics on where and when civil wars are fought, why civil wars break out, how they are waged, who wins, and when peace fails or lasts. It also introduces a brief history of civil wars and explains why they matter to people in and out of the country at war.
