Hubert Dreyfus ( 1929-2017), Raymond Smullyan (1919-2017) y el Sueño de Leibniz (1646-1716)

Resumen. Dos filósofos recientemente fallecidos, Hubert L. Dreyfus yRaymond Smullyan, analizan las ideas de G.W. Leibniz sobre sistemasformales y máquinas lógicas. Dreyfus reconoce la importancia fundamentalde Leibniz en lo que llama el largo proceso de reducción del pensamientoal cálculo mecánico mediante sistemas formales y Smullyan demuestrala imposibilidad de construir una máquina que resuelva todoslos problemas matemáticos, y con mayor razón los debates filosóficos. Lavisión de Dreyfus sobre los proyectos de Leibniz se puede completar conel hecho de que Leibniz abandonó en su madurez las exageradas pretensiones de juventud. La incompletitud de sistemas formales utilizadapor Smullyan y que se remonta a Gödel se considera irrefutable, pero laproposición no decidible que no puede ser probada ni refutada en unsistema formal resulta ser trivial para los propósitos de los proyectosleibnicianos. Sin embargo, es importante señalar la influencia de Leibnizen la prueba del teorema de incompletitud de Gödel. Abstract. Two philosophers recently deceased, Hubert L. Dreyfus and Raymond Smullyan, deal with G.W. Leibniz´s ideas on formal systemsand logical machines. Dreyfus acknowledges Leibniz´s importance inwhat he calls the long process of reduction of thinking to mechanicalcalculation by means of formal algorithms and Smullyan demonstratesthe impossibility of devising a machine able to solve all mathematicalproblems, let alone all philosophical debates, despite Leibniz´s high expectations.Our contention is that Dreyfus´s vision of Leibniz´s influencecan be complemented with the fact that Leibniz himself abandoned hiswild expectations of youth on the possibilities of the ars combinatoria andcharacteristica universalis. Smullyan´s use of the theorems of incompletenessof formal systems cannot be refuted, but the undecidable propositionthat fails to be proved or disproved in a formal system turns out tobe rather trivial for the purposes of the leibnitian projects. However, weargue that it is important to note Leibniz´s influence on Gödel proof ofthe incompleteness theorem.
