3D model of the Statue of Claudius without modern restorations. The statue (MANN, inv.6056) was found in Herculaneum. It was to be part of the Augusteum (cd. Basilica), inserted on the right, in the rectangular exedra of the back side. The statue of Sitting Claudius was pendant with the other colossal statue of Augustus (MANN 6040, cat.23), of which he reproposes the same iconographic pattern as Jupiter enthroned, albeit with slight differences. The iconography of the emperor assimilated to Zeus, was well suited to the image of imperial, supreme and universal power, as summarized by the symbolism of the Gemma Augustea, in which Augustus himself is depicted as Jupiter and with the Lithuanius of augurs in hand, a sign of military power.
