Hand-Drawn Images and Playful Pedagogy: Experiencing Lynda Barry’s “Writing the Unthinkable”

This chapter discusses the experience of attending the Writing the Unthinkable workshop of Lynda Barry. It depicts the experience of being given space to reflect on the process of creation and change it into a more energized and meaningful process. As shown through her comic frames, Barry's oeuvre unveils an interest in empowering her readers to trust their creative expression and foster their authentic voices. In Barry's 2002 graphic memoir, she encourages readers to learn from established authors while also trusting their innate capabilities. The usage of simple materials is also significant to Barry's teaching philosophy. The chapter explores how Barry created a space of freedom, experimentation, and excitement in her workshops.
