EFFECT OF SUPERVISOR INCIVILITY ON TURNOVER INTENTION: ROLE OF ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR
View through CrossRef
The manifestation of turnover intention among nurses has been a source of worry to researchers, practitioners, and policy makers due to its detrimental effect on the healthcare system. Therefore, examining the factors that trigger nurses to have the intention to quit their jobs is what emphasizes the need for this study. Hence, the study investigated the effect of supervisor incivility a dimension of workplace incivility on turnover intention among the nurses of General Hospital Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. This study also investigated the role of organizational citizenship behaviour in weakening the relationship between the supervisor incivility and turnover intention. Survey research design was utilized for the study. The source of data for the study is primary and was collected through self-administered questionnaire distributed to the respondents through simple random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Findings of the study revealed that supervisor incivility increases turnover intention by 44.3% thus, showing its significant effect on turnover intention. For the moderating relationship, it was found that organizational citizenship behaviour moderated the relationship between supervisor incivility and turnover intention by 4%, hence, OCB provided a small but statistically significant buffering effect, weakening the positive relationship. The study, based on the research findings, recommends among others that the Hospital Management Board should develop a zero-tolerance policy that prohibits uncivil behaviour and ensure consequences for perpetrators. Provide regular training sessions for supervisor for effective communication, conflict resolution and emotional intelligence.
