In-Vivo Investigation of Neuromodulatory, Antinociceptive, and Anti-Inflammatory Potential of the Seed Extract from Trachyspermum Ammi (L.)
View through CrossRef
Background: Trachyspermum ammi is commonly known as Bishop’s Weed, Ajwan and Ajvain. the plant commonly grows in Pakistan and different parts of Asia. The seeds of Tarachyspermum are used as spice in food items specially in pickles and breads. It is effective in abdominal colic. It has very good antimicrobial activity. Traditionally it is used for various ailments.
Objective: The purpose of the study is to evaluate analgesic and antiinflammatory activity of Trachyspermum ammi.
Methodology: The current research conducted to find effects of seed extract on behaviour, pain and inflammation. The neuropharmacological activities condcuted on animal models ie mice and rats. Open field, Head dip, cage cross, rearing, light and dark test, forced swim test and stationary rod tests were performed on animals for neuropharmacological assessment. Antinociceptive activity was performed by using the method of acetic acid induced writhing, tail flichk and hot plate induced pain mathods. Antiinflammatory activity was condcuted by using formalin test and carrageenan induced inflammation method.
Results: Animals produced CNS stimulant effect on behaviour and the results were comparable with standard drugs diazepam and imipramine. The extract of Trachyspermum produced antinociceptive effect that was dose dependent ie at low dose it produced less effect and as the dose incresaed the effcet incresaed. Antiinflammatory effect of extraxt of T. ammi was also singnificant. the effect was assayed on mice and rats and it was comparable with the standard drug Aspirin.
Conclusion: The extratc of T. ammi can be utilised to improve the depression. The extract can also be utilised as an antiinflammatory and analgesic agent.
