Syriac literature

Abstract “Syriac” is the name given to the Aramaic dialect of the city of Edessa (modern Urfa in Turkey) in Northern Mesopotamia ( see Aramaic and Syriac); in Late Antiquity, Syriac became the literary lingua franca of much of the Christian population of the Middle East and remained so until it was eventually superseded by Arabic in the Medieval period.
