Courtesan Nakagawa from the Nakamanji house

Left part of the triptych (cf. KI 8327-7 + KI 8327-10) Yoshiikuga 様 LinTriptych with three senior courtesans and their kamuro promenting through the main street of the night Yoshiwara. In the later Edo period, the kamuro often had the same clothes as the courtesan who accompanied them. Whether and how many kamuro accompanied a courtesan depended on the rank of courtesan. The black coat (uchikake) of the courtesan is decorated with flower circles (chrysanthemums, swordslilies, cherry blossoms,...), the belt (obi) is dyed in the shiborizome Der 様 Der 様 Der Der Der Der Der Der Der) technique. The kimono of the kamuro also shows different flower circles, but is yellow in the base tone.
