View of St Nicholas's Church, the parish church
of Plumstead in Kent (now in London). Plumstead was a prosperous
village since medieval times, with drained marshes suitable for
grazing sheep and fruit growing industry. The earliest parts of the
parish church are of the south aisle dating from the 12th century.
It has transepts which date from the 13th century, a north aisle
built in the 15th century and a west tower built in 1664. The
artist is Captain Francis Grose F.S.A. (1731-1791), a topographical
draughtsman. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1769 and
1777, and made numerous sketching tours with other amateur
artists.
