Wāw Al-Ḥāl Between Arabic Grammatical Theory And Translation Practice: An Analysis Of Malay Translations Of The Al-Quran
View through CrossRef
The grammatical element wāw al-ḥāl in Arabic plays a significant role in expressing circumstantial meaning that accompanies the main action within a Arabic language sentence. In the context of translating the al-Quran into Malay, this element poses a challenge due to the structural and semantic differences between Arabic and Malay, particularly the absence of a direct grammatical equivalent in the target language. This study aims to examine how wāw al-ḥāl is translated in three different Malay al-Quran translations: Tafsir Pimpinan al-Raḥmān, Mukhtaṣar al-Bayān al-Quran Translation, and Tafsir Yusoff Zaki. It further evaluates the appropriateness of the translation approaches used based on classical Arabic grammatical principles. The study adopts a qualitative textual analysis by purposively identifying 20 Quranic verses containing wāw al-ḥāl. The analysis is conducted through a semantic and functional translation framework, guided by traditional Arabic grammar theory. The findings reveal a variety of translation strategies, including explicit rendering, implicit interpretation, and occasional omission. The findings contribute to enhancing the quality of Malay Quranic translations and offer insights into producing translations that better reflect the intended meanings of the original Arabic text.
