Sacred Or Scary? Horror Redefining Javanese Culture In Keramat (2009)

View through CrossRef
This study explores how the horror film Keramat (2009) redefines sacred Javanese cultural elements through its cinematic portrayal. Using a reader-response framework, the research examines audience perceptions, particularly among Javanese viewers, regarding the depiction of traditional cultural aspects such as gamelan music, kebaya outfits, wayang puppetry, and the formal “kromo” Javanese language in horror scenes. While these elements enhance the film’s eerie atmosphere, they risk altering their original meanings. The findings reveal that these cultural symbols, regarded by the Javanese as sacred and spiritually significant, are reframed in the film as mystical or frightening. Interviews with Javanese participants show that although the film evokes nostalgia and introduces viewers to important cultural practices, it simultaneously creates discomfort by associating them with supernatural fear. Participants also express concern that such portrayals could mislead younger or non-Javanese audiences, reducing the depth of cultural understanding and promoting stereotypes. This shift from sacredness to horror raises critical questions about media responsibility in representing local traditions. The research contributes to cultural and media studies by highlighting the complex relationship between representation and perception, especially when sacred traditions are reframed for entertainment. It emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive storytelling, especially in genres like horror that rely heavily on symbolic elements. The study concludes that while Keramat effectively integrates cultural elements into a compelling narrative, it may inadvertently contribute to the misrepresentation and marginalization of Javanese cultural heritage.
