Impact of Cognitive Restructuring Counselling Technique in Addressing Menace of Drug Abuse and Insecurity in Gusau Metropolis, Zamfara State, Nigeria

Drug abuse is a significant driver of insecurity in Gusau Metropolis, contributing to violent crimes, armed robbery, and other social disturbances. This paper examines the role of cognitive restructuring as a counseling technique in addressing drug abuse and, consequently, reducing insecurity in the region. Cognitive restructuring, a core component of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), helps individuals identify and modify maladaptive thought patterns that contribute to substance abuse and criminal behavior. By replacing distorted beliefs with healthier cognitive frameworks, individuals can develop better coping mechanisms, reduce aggression, and make more positive life choices. This paper highlights the link between drug abuse and insecurity in Gusau metropolis, explores the key components of cognitive restructuring technique, and presents recommendations for its implementation in addressing potential causes of insecurity. The study concludes that integrating cognitive restructuring as a counselling intervention into drug abuse can play a crucial role in breaking the cycle of addiction and crimes, ultimately fostering a safer and more stable society in Gusau Metropolis.
