Complementary therapies in palliative care: state of the evidence

View through CrossRef
Multidisciplinary personnel in palliative care (PC) settings must make care planning decisions daily to respond to the needs of patients and their families. A variety of complementary therapies are used to reduce suffering and improve quality of life, but there are varying degrees of evidence supporting their use in PC settings and with the particular issues seen in PC patients. This presentation reviews the current state of evidence regarding complementary therapies that are relatively ubiquitous and available in PC settings. Topics covered include acupuncture-related modalities, aromatherapy, biofield therapies (Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki), expressive arts therapies (art, writing, music methods), massage, mind-body interventions and movement approaches.  Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the rationale and uses of complementary therapies that are commonly applied in PC settings. 2. Describe the state of evidence on effectiveness of complementary therapies commonly used in PC settings. 3. Describe key challenges and facilitators of effective delivery of complementary therapies in PC settings.
