Portrait George II, King of Great Britain (1683-1760)

View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of George II, King of Great Britain. The son of George I is depicted as a chest image facing to the right. He has turned his head to the left and holds it slightly oblique, as if he were the viewer. His head adorns a wig in whose a curl is a knot. Here he wears comparatively simple clothes with sash and chest stars of the trouser band. Under his left arm, a triple pitch is leaking out. The portrait is oval with a base with a three-line inscription in the Dutch language. From 1727 until his death, Georg August was King of Great Britain and Ireland, German Elector of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and nominally one of the dukes to Braunschweig and Lüneburg. On the occasion of his coronation Georg Friedrich Händel composed the four “Coronation Anthems” (HWV 258-261). The Dutch publisher and copper engraver Pieter Tanje has executed this engraving. Due to the subtleties of the facial parts and the conversion of the depicted one could also be the use of a steel stitch. As a template, Tanje chose a 1727 stencil art sheet by John Faber, which is now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Incidentally, a specimen of this paper is also there. The Veste Coburg also calls a leaf its own. Signature: J. Faber ad viv. fecit. D. Onder de Linden Excudit. P. Tanje sculps. 1752. Caption: GEORGE DE IIde.
