River Landscape: “The Bridge of Sopoar” (watercolor, verso); Portrait of a Gentleman (painting, recto)

The recto of this folio features a watercolor landscape that shows, on the left, a stretch of land, with several trees, leading out to pale blue water. In the distance is a brown bridge and small huts. The atmospheric background has blue mountains with traces of clouds. At the top of the depiction is the inscription, “Court of Mugoul” in pencil, and at the bottom, “Bridge at Sopoar” in brown ink. “Sopoar” refers to Sopore (Suyyapur), a town in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, northwest of Srinagar. The verso of this folio features an unfinished portrait of a gentleman cut into oval. There are pencil traces of a shirt and scarf draped around his neck. His face has been painted, with a full, dark beard. There is also a sketch of a turban on his head. Company School.
