River Landscape: "The Jhelum Below Baramoola" (watercolor, verso); Portrait of a Gentleman (painting, recto)

The recto of this folio features a watercolor landscape. At the bank of a river are small boats with pitched roofs. In the distance is a small hut and trees. The atmospheric background is comprised of blue-greys of various saturation. At the top is the following inscription in pencil: “Court of Mo…” and at the bottom is, written in brown ink, "The Jhelum below Baramoola". “Jehlum” refers to the Jhelum River that flows through Indian and Pakistani-controlled portions of Kashmir, as well as Pakistani-controlled portions of Punjab. “Baramoola” refers to Baramulla, a district in Jammu and Kashmir. The verso of this folio features an unfinished portrait of a gentleman, cut into an oval. There are pencil traces of robe exposing a shirt and arms coming forward. His face has been painted, with a full and white beard. The beard type is distinct to Rajasthan. He wears a red turban. Company School.
