WIRELINE TRACTOR SYSTEMS IN SIDETRACK WELLS

View through CrossRef
Sidetrack wells are widely used to extend reservoir access and improve field recovery; however, their complex geometry limits conventional gravity-driven wireline conveyance. High curvature and increased friction often prevent tools from reaching target depths beyond the sidetrack entry. Wireline tractor systems provide active traction against the wellbore wall, enabling reliable deployment of logging and intervention tools in such environments. This paper reviews the operating principles, classification, and practical applications of wireline tractor systems in sidetrack wells. Performance limitations related to traction capacity, cable stress, and environmental conditions are discussed, together with field experience demonstrating improved operational reach and efficiency. Recent developments in adaptive traction control and digital modeling are also outlined as pathways for further performance enhancement. Keywords: Wireline tractor systems, Sidetrack wells, Tool conveyance.
