EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL CONDITIONS OF PENTLANDITE FORMATION

View through CrossRef
Based on experimental data, we have studied the state diagram for the part the Fe – Ni – S system limited by the Fe – FeS – NiS– Ni trapezium. Polythermal sections of this system are plotted near the Fe0.53S0.47 – Ni0.53S0.47 section at Fe:Ni = 1 for different sulfur contents, and isothermal sections are plotted at 900, 820, and 600 °C. A mechanism is proposed for various kinds of pentlandite formation. Its forms of segregation depend on composition of the initial melt. If the system is relatively depleted in Ni, pentlandite rims are formed around grains of Ni-bearing pyrrhotite. If there are little pyrrhotite, pentlandite replaces it to the full and takes a rounded or oval shape. Pentlandite formation in the form of exsolution structures in Ni-bearing pyrrhotite is caused by displacement of the boundary of monosulfide solid solution off the metal part of the system toward sulfur below 600 °C.

47 section at Fe:Ni = 1 for different sulfur contents, and isothermal sections are plotted at 900, 820, and 600 °C.
