The Best of Smollett, the Worst of Smollett

This chapter offers some reflections on the work of editing Tobias Smollett’s writing. As one who engaged in the editing and assisted the editing of certain Smollett titles for the University of Georgia’s The Works of Tobias Smollett between 1990 and 2011, and who has worked on an independent co-edited volume of miscellaneous titles until 2015, the author describes having had the opportunity to help edit not only some of Smollett's best works but also some of his worst. Drawing on an expanded reading of Smollett's work, including those that have been overlooked or disputed, the author offers several insights into the man and his canon. This leads to some questions about the influence of Lewis M. Knapp's still authoritative biography, Tobias Smollett: Doctor of Men and Manners (1949).
