A tanulmány Schelling tudattalanfogalmának fejlődését vázolja fel és főbb állításai a következők: (1) Schelling filozófiájában legalább három tudattalanfogalom jelenik meg: a tudattalan mint abszolút én, mint természet és mint sötét alap. (2) A romantikus tudattalanfogalom szinte minden vonása megtalálható Schellingnél a „tudattalan teremtőerő” fogalmában. (3) A kortárs tudatfilozófiai kutatások szempontjából az egzisztencia által eltaszított alap fogalma a legizgalmasabb. (4) A tudatosság előtti szellemi és lelki folyamatok egészen különleges és komplex leírását kapjuk a Stuttgarti magánelőadások szövegében.
