A história és fabula jelentései Pázmány Péternél

: This essay is a continuation of a brief overview in which I applied the results of Antal Pirnát’s study of two terms, fabula and historia, presented in his article titled Fabula és história (Fabula and Historia) to Péter Pázmány’s A Mahomet vallása hamisságárúl (On the falseness of Mahomet’s religion). Here, I demonstrate that the previous findings need refining: after having considered the other works of Péter Pázmány, it turned out that the terms fabula and historia appear with a variety of nuanced connotations and that he used a broader range of forms, allusions and references than previously assumed. Historia expresses “history, story, historiography, historia sacra, reality, and object of faith”. Fabula refers to “example, parable; something that is not real or true; something that is not textually, historically based or lacks a reference to an authority; individual invention”. As a related term to fabula, költés (“invention, making up, making”) has parallel meanings to the latter. The examples and how Péter Pázmány used these terms are not his inventions: these are in concordance with those in contemporary and earlier national and international literature, which he knew thoroughly.
