The Oxford Handbook of Language and Prejudice
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This Handbook explores various connections between language and prejudice. Rather than simply detailing how prejudice is directed at language and language users, which is known as linguistic prejudice, the Handbook extensively explores how language acts as a technology of prejudice and actively shapes prejudice itself. Working against the dominance of Global North knowledge production on matters of language and prejudice, this edited volume features multiple contributions from emerging and prominent scholars based in the Global South. These contributions cover a range of themes such as gender and sexuality, ableism, race and ethnicity, broad social issues, politics and religion, education, and methods of combatting linguistic prejudice. The Handbook, as a whole, offers a much needed rearticulation of prejudice, especially in the realm of language.
