Ulus Juchi Tatars in light of historical sources

The relevance of this article is due to the fact that the principles of intercultural and interethnic interaction are increasingly being approved, the need for a scientific understanding of the issues of ethnogenesis and ethnic history of the peoples of Russia, including the Tatar people, is being updated. In this regard, the analysis of the rich experience of a comprehensive study on the ethnic history of the Tatar people becomes important. The problem of ethnogenesis of the Tatars is devoted to a whole layer of scientific and popular science literature, primarily in domestic historical literature. Historians, linguists, ethnologists, archaeologists have carried out a tremendous research work, that reflects wide palette of views on the ethnic history of the Tatar people. This article is devoted to the study of the ethnonym "Tatars" in historical literature in the light of the analysis of historical sources. Various hypotheses of the origin of the ethnonym "Tatars" are given. The article analyzes medieval sources (Orkhon-Yenisei runik, Chinese sources, Arab-Persian historical literature, notes of Western European travelers, Russian annals) on the problem of the origin of the ethnonym "Tatars", the place and role of Tatars in the ethnopolitical history of Ulus Juchi.
