Breaking the Dopamine-overthinking Cycle: A Behavioral and Cognitive Analysis

View through CrossRef
In the digital age, overthinking has emerged as a widespread cognitive and emotional challenge, often intensified by compulsive digital consumption. This paper explores the relationship between overthinking and dopamine-driven behavioral loops, particularly in the context of short-form content and constant stimulation. By integrating insights from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral theory, the study proposes that overthinking is not merely a mental habit but a conditioned response reinforced by irregular dopamine rewards. The paper introduces a conceptual framework explaining how digital environments exploit reward uncertainty, leading to cycles of distraction, anxiety, and reduced cognitive clarity. It further discusses strategies to break this loop through behavioral restructuring, mindfulness, and conscious disengagement from overstimulating platforms. This paper proposes a novel Dopamine-Overthinking Feedback Loop Model that integrates internal rumination and external behavioral addiction into a unified cognitive-behavioral framework.
