Re-visioning Virginity in the Rewriting of Virgin

View through CrossRef
Chapter 3 first describes Virgin as a popular feminist book dedicated to dismantling virginity myths by revealing its changing configurations throughout western history. The chapter then analyzes Virgin’s remaking in Turkish and introduces “feminist translation” as a political project that seeks to intervene in local heteropatriarchal truth regimes and enable cross-border flows of subversive feminist knowledges. The chapter examines the manifestation of that feminist agenda by focusing on the politics of text choice, vocabulary choices, the translator’s preface, and finally, the material repackaging of the book. In doing so, Chapter 3 reveals the translator’s familiarizing and defamiliarizing strategies to increase the translated book’s chance of being admitted into local feminist canons and provide a counter-hegemonic discourse on virginity.
