Daphne virus S: A carlavirus from daphne

Abstract
Daphne virus S (DVS) was associated with leaf distortion and down‐curling of leaf edges of
Daphne odora
Thunb. ‘Leucanthe’ but was latent in other
Daphne
spp. and cultivars. DVS was transmitted from daphne to daphne by grafting and by
Myzus persicae
(Sulz.), but attempts to sap transmit the virus to 20 different herbaceous test plants failed. The virus was purified from
D. odora
flowers by clarification with n‐butanol, followed by differential and sucrose‐gradient centrifugation. Preparations had a 260:280 ratio of 1.35 and a sedimentation coefficient of 174 S. An antiserum to DVS had a titre of 1:2048. DVS was distantly seroiogically related to carnation latent virus and potato virus S but was serologically unrelated to three other carlaviruses and eight potyviruses. The straight to slight flexuous particles of DVS had normal lengths ranging from 704 to 716 nm. It is proposed that DVS is a distinct carlavirus. The present cryptogram for DVS is */*: */*: E/E: S/Ap.
