Painted canvas fragment

View through Harvard Museums
Painted plain weave cotton duck canvas fragment with irregular curved knife cut edges. The heavy cotton duck has a white priming and is painted with crimson paint on one side, with rivulets of matte medium or paint, and orange paint on the other. The paint appears to be brush applied diagonally with respect to the canvas weave. The crimson stroke has a dry brush effect at the edge, while the orange passage has a hard straight edge, which partially covers the dry brush edge of the crimson passage.
