Abstract
The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is undeniably one of the most pressing medical emergencies of our era. The World Health Organization’s projections indicate that by the year 2000, between 30 and 40 million people world-wide, including five to ten million children will have been infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. It is likely that around half of those infected with HIV will die from AIDS within seven to ten years of being infected. Although the development of improved approaches to clinical care, such as the treatment and prevention of opportunistic infections have improved life expectancy there is clearly an urgent need for antiviral drugs of improved efficacy and prophylactic vaccines.
