Toward a Pragmatist Egalitarianism
View through CrossRef
This chapter outlines some of American pragmatism’s central doctrines (its “problem-centric” slant, its experimentalism, its antiessentialism and its impetus for mediation and reconciliation) and indicates how these doctrines can assist us in thinking more clearheadedly about equality and inequality. More particularly, the chapter clarifies how these doctrines together suggest an approach to equality and inequality that is, contrary to some of the prevailing approaches in the egalitarian literature, philosophically realist, mindful of history and context, and attentive to real-world struggles for equality. The chapter also gives an overview of some of the central features of the pragmatist egalitarianism that the book defends.
